It isn’t the trauma
you remember first
when looking back,

but the smaller drama
under foot
as you turn to see us ants,

thirst,

mistaking grains for sugar
flung from the pillar
you turned into.

My father saying,

Okay Ma, we’re going
to close the casket now,

for all of us left there

and her

to hear.
