Barbie, Left on the Front Porch Overnight

 

El Niño came last

    night, knotted hair

 

flattened out, covered

                 with a wreath

 

of tan brown leaves.

     Say to her, it’ll

 

be okay,

      come inside, and like bells,

 

dry off with

             vibrations,

 

songs of hopscotch

           and tethered planes

 

giving off only love

                          lost by

 

the hair dryer.

       Doorbells ring

 

with no answer,

         neighbors too busy

 

because they haven’t

                been outside

 

since

         Friday.

Max Lemuz is a Mexican-American who recently graduated from California State University, San Bernardino with a B.A. in English.  He tutors foster youth full-time and writes poetry in his head all the time.  He spends his weekends with his amazing wife and daughter in San Bernardino.  He has been recently published in SoFloPoJo, Scarlet Leaf Review, and Triggerfish Critical Review.

Devon Wootten is a faculty member at Whitman College.
